Self Creating and Self Discovering

“Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself”
Those were the words of George Bernard Shaw. Most people would disagree. I have heard someone say that creating yourself means you do not like who you already are good enough.
I think the problem is that we tend to misinterpret the phrase ‘creating ourselves’, to mean the need to conceal and manipulate the image of ourselves to help us feel and accept ourselves better. I think creating yourself should mean becoming the person you have always wanted to be, to be the person you will be proud of. We have the power to decide what we believe in, what we do and what actions we take to become the person we fancy.
While I agree with Bernard Shaw on creating yourself, I do not agree with not finding yourself. I think the two should complement each other.  Finding yourself means that the person you have always wanted to be already exists. But what happens when you can’t find that person? Do you go around in circles looking for him/her? Do you go into depression or a place of failure and isolation? No, you create that person you want to be. Because I think the reason you didn’t find the person you think you are is because you have already created an image in your mind and until you become that image you will always feel something missing.
Creating yourself is not becoming what you think somebody else’s idea of yourself should be. Creating yourself should not be absolutely changing who you are. Creating yourself should be getting to know and appreciate the ‘self’ we already have. Creating yourself should be evolving and experimenting with new experiences, adopting the good and discarding the bad. While on the journey of growing, the path could change but the vision should be clear. The vision is who we truly are.  And just like the snake sheds an outgrown skin, we should shed the aspects of our life that doesn’t fit anymore while we make room for new healthier paths.
If you don’t know yourself you can’t control yourself, you won’t have mastery over yourself. Self discovery and self creating must always work hand in hand. To aid the process, we have to be self aware; we use our imagination, conscience and our self-will.
Self awareness makes us recognize our freedom to choose. It enables us to stand apart and examine the way we see ‘ourselves’, we are empowered to examine our thoughts.  When we are self aware, the only vision we have of ourselves won’t come from the social mirror.
Our imagination gives us the ability to create in our minds beyond our reality.
Our conscience is our knowledge of what is right and wrong, of what governs our behavior.
Self-will gives us the ability to act based on our self awareness, free of all other influence.
While you are on the process of re scripting your life, remember that loving yourself is a magical key to creating a healthy you. When we feel lost and confused, it is our subconscious attempting to wake us to who we truly are. You are capable of changing your own path. You can stick to the bigger picture but be prepared to embrace change along the way. It is ok to pursue what you really want.
You are just you. Envy is ignorance.
